The bioluminescence in the ocean is a reaction of the phytoplankton to the movement. It is better to do it very dark nights to fully appreciate the reaction which is caused by luciferin molecules that respond to oxygen.
Bioluminescence can also is found in other marine organisms: bacteria, algae, jellyfish, worms, crustaceans, sea stars, fish, and sharks among others.
It can be also triggered by threatening or when these animals look for a mate since it makes it easy for them to be noticed.
This reaction can be seen almost in any, and Drake Bay is no exception.
